What To Do Right Now

A Burst Pipe Won't Wait — Here's What To Do

A burst pipe can push hundreds of litres of water through your home in minutes, soaking carpets, ceilings, cabinetry, and anything stored below. The faster you act, the less damage there is to clean up and pay for. If water is pouring out right now, do these three things straight away:

1. Turn the water off at the mains. Head to your water meter — usually near the front boundary or in a garden box — and turn the tap beside it clockwise until it stops. This cuts the flow to the whole house and stops the flooding. 2. Isolate the power to any affected areas at the switchboard if water is anywhere near power points, lights, or wiring — never touch electrics while standing in water. 3. Call us. You'll speak to a licensed plumber who can talk you through it while we're on the way.

Older homes through the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley often have a stop tap inside as well — under the kitchen sink or in the laundry — which lets you isolate the mains quickly if the meter is hard to reach. If you can't find the shut-off, call us and we'll guide you to it over the phone.

How We Fix It

Locating the Burst and Repairing It Properly

When we arrive, the first priority is making everything safe and stopping the flow — isolating the mains, draining down the affected line, and getting the water under control. From there we locate the burst. Sometimes it's obvious; other times the pipe is buried in a wall, under the slab, or running underground through the yard, and we use leak detection to pinpoint it without tearing the place apart.

Bursts and splits have common causes around here. Corroded old copper and galvanised pipe in the district's older hills homes eventually fails; ground movement and shifting soils stress joints; tree roots crack underground lines; a hard cold snap in the ranges can freeze and split a pipe; and water hammer from high pressure gradually works fittings loose. We identify why it failed, not just where, so the same section doesn't let go again.

Once we've found it, we carry out the repair — cutting out and replacing the failed section, remaking joints to code, and pressure-testing before we restore your supply. If the damage is extensive or the pipework is at the end of its life, we'll talk you through a temporary make-safe now versus a permanent repair or full re-pipe, and help you get the space dried out and made safe so it doesn't turn into mould or rot down the track.

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Turn the water off at the mains. Your main stop tap is next to the water meter, usually near the front boundary or in a garden box — turn it clockwise until it stops. Many older hills homes also have an internal stop tap under the kitchen sink or in the laundry. If water is anywhere near electrics, isolate the power at the switchboard as well, then call us straight away.

  • Yes. A burst or badly leaking pipe can cause serious water damage very quickly, and if the water reaches wiring or power points it becomes a safety risk too. Shut off the water at the mains, keep clear of any electrics near the water, and call us so we can get there and stop it properly.

  • The most common causes we see are corroded old copper and galvanised pipe in the district's older homes, ground movement stressing joints, tree roots cracking underground lines, freezing during a cold snap in the ranges, and water hammer from high pressure loosening fittings over time. We identify why yours failed so we can stop it happening again.

  • Yes. Not every burst is out in the open — plenty are buried in walls, under the slab, or running underground through the yard. We use leak detection to pinpoint the exact location so we can access and repair it without unnecessary damage to your home or garden.

  • Wherever possible we carry out a permanent repair on the first visit — cutting out the failed section, remaking joints to code, and pressure-testing before we restore your supply. If a section needs to be made safe first, we'll explain the temporary fix versus a permanent repair or re-pipe so you can make an informed decision.

  • We're based in Gembrook and service the surrounding eastern suburbs and hills including Belgrave, Emerald, Pakenham, Healesville, Lilydale, and the wider Yarra Ranges and Cardinia regions.
