When Your Hot Water Isn't Behaving
No hot water at all is the obvious one, but it's rarely the first sign. Long before a system quits completely it starts dropping hints. Water that runs lukewarm no matter how far you turn the tap, or a shower that goes cold halfway through, usually points to a failed element or thermostat on an electric unit, or a burner, pilot light, or thermocouple fault on gas and LPG.
Then there's water where it shouldn't be. A slow drip from the pressure and temperature relief valve is normal now and then, but a constant trickle, a puddle under the tank, or rust weeping from a seam means the cylinder is on the way out and needs looking at before it lets go completely.
Rumbling, banging, or kettling noises point to sediment built up in the bottom of the tank. Discoloured or rusty hot water is another red flag. And out here in the hills, plenty of homes run off LPG rather than mains gas, which brings its own quirks. Whatever the symptom, it's worth getting on to early before a small fault turns into a cold house.
