When the Water Won't Stop

A Leaking Roof in a Storm Can't Wait

When rain is driving across the hills and you've got water coming through the ceiling, it's an awful feeling. A stain spreads across the plaster, drips start landing in the bucket, and you're left wondering how much damage is happening above your head. Left unchecked, that water soaks insulation, swells plasterboard until it sags or collapses, and can reach electrical wiring and light fittings.

Up here in the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley, roof leaks have their own local causes. Wind-driven rain gets pushed up and under tiles, the heavy tree canopy drops leaf litter that blocks gutters and valleys until they overflow back into the roof, falling branches crack tiles, and old flashings around chimneys, skylights, and valleys fail after years of weather. Storms do the rest.

The tricky part is that leaks travel. Water rarely drips straight down from where it got in. It runs along rafters, battens, and the underside of the roof before it finds a low point and drops onto your ceiling. The stain you can see is almost never directly below the actual entry point, which is exactly why guesswork and patching over the wet spot so often fails.

How We Fix It

Make-Safe First, Then a Permanent Repair

When you call, you speak directly to a licensed roof plumber who can talk you through what to do in the meantime while we're on the way. Our first priority on arrival is to stop the water. We carry out a temporary make-safe, covering and sealing the affected area so the leak is under control and no more water gets into your home, even if the weather is still coming down.

Once things are watertight, we find the true entry point. We trace the water back from where it's appearing inside to where it's actually getting in, checking tiles, flashings, valleys, ridges, gutters, and penetrations rather than just patching the spot below the stain. Finding the real source is the difference between a repair that lasts and a leak that keeps coming back.

From there we carry out a permanent repair, whether that's replacing cracked or slipped tiles, renewing failed flashings and valleys, clearing and correcting blocked or overflowing gutters, or repairing storm damage. If your leak is the result of a storm and you're making a claim, we can also provide the documentation and photos your insurer needs.

Benjamin was very holistic in his inspection and provided a detailed report after checking the roof. I had a roof leak that was causing the power to trip, and he helped identify the areas that needed fixing. He also clearly identified other areas of concern that could lead to major issues down the track. Very helpful and honest. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to friends and family.

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If it's safe to do so, move furniture and valuables away from the affected area and place buckets or containers under any active drips. If the ceiling is bulging or water is near light fittings, keep clear and switch off power to that area at the switchboard if you can do so safely. Then call us and we'll talk you through anything else while we're on the way.

  • In most cases, yes. On arrival we carry out a temporary make-safe to get the leak under control and stop water entering your home, even in wet weather. Once conditions allow, we return to the true source and carry out the permanent repair.

  • Because water travels. Once it gets under the roof it runs along rafters, battens, and the underside of the roofing until it finds a low point and drops onto your ceiling. The stain you see is rarely directly below where the water actually got in, which is why we trace the leak back to its true entry point rather than patching the wet spot.

  • Up here the common culprits are wind-driven rain forced up under tiles, gutters and valleys blocked by heavy tree canopy until they overflow back into the roof, failed flashings and valleys, cracked or slipped tiles from falling branches, and general storm damage. We check all of these to pinpoint the actual cause.

  • Yes. If your leak is the result of a storm or other insurable event, we can provide documentation and photos of the damage and the repair required to support your insurance claim, produced by a licensed roof plumber.
